Bob Thurman @ TED Talks

Bob Thurman marries Buddhism and technology on this short but very moving talk at TED.

Key quote: β€œThe key to compassion is fun.”

I so badly needed this reminder.

That was an amusing, and very roundabout presentation.

It is absolutely true that fun (joy, happiness, etc.) is the key to success and health. If you’re not having fun, you’re doing something wrong. And realizing that nugget of wisdom is itself fun, because it means you get to do even more joyful playing as you attempt to figure out how to do it right.

We can learn a lot from very young kids (who haven’t been too confused yet by adult’s irrational and bizarre social norms). A toddler knows that failure is fun. When the giant block tower that they worked so hard to build is done, they knock it over and laugh like crazy. Because, really, “failure” is just another kind of success – success at discovering how the universe works. In the toddler’s case, they are successfully learning that gravity makes things fall over when they aren’t perfectly balanced. And what could be more fun than learning some useful bit of knowledge that will come in handy every single day of your life?
