The Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila subscribes to the educational philosophy that focuses on the development of the total person: his intellectual growth, his physical well-being, his social consciousness, his moral and spiritual enhancement…
I can’t help but smile everytime I notice the obvious “integral” philosophy of my alma mater. I just wish I paid more attention when I was in college, but I was so busy studying, reading, commuting in the flood, and who knows what else I was doing during those days.
I have mixed feelings whenever I look back at my college days. Sure, I did have pressure and fun, but I feel nostalgically bitter whenever I’m reminded of how poor my college was, and how many poor students were not getting the education their above-average intellect deserved. During my time I ranted (quitely) about how inadequate the basic facilities were, how our classrooms were furnished by dilapidated blackboards and chairs, how our library was full of ancient dusty useless books, how our restrooms smelled, how our professors sucked (some of them), how the security guards were a bunch of jack-asses, and how our computer rooms were too cold just to keep those minicomputers running their stupid Assembly and COBOL programs. Anak ng…
But before I degenerate into old-fashioned self-pity, I also remember how dedicated the students were; how they studied hard and rose above the challenges in spite of the lack all around them; how they hungout in pagodas along the Kanluran building having fun while doing their homework; how patient and understanding most of our teachers were; how we went to Bon Jovi concerts with our cool professors; how me and my classmates exchanged notes, shared books, helped each other with our thesis; and how we patiently awaited in the school canteen and computer rental shops just to have a glimpse of our collective crushes.
Looking back, it wasn’t really that bad. I had the cheapest (and high-quality) college education in the country and the opportunity of growing up with the best minds of my generation. What more could I’ve asked for? [note: just to give our First World neighbors an idea -- the total cost of my 4-year college education converted to dollars (at current exchange rate) is approximately $800 (including daily allowances). and i was only a half-scholar.] So my unsolicited advice to all those who feel they’re not getting the education they deserve, please look again, do something if you feel like it, but never lose hope. I understand that each of us have our own challenges. But if a bunch of college students from a Third World country can do it… I rest my case.
Happy 39th Anniversary my dear alma mater. I hope you and your children are doing much better. You have one very grateful child here. Maraming salamat.

Pretty cool!
My current uni talks the integral talk:
We educate future leaders in natural health sciences that integrate mind, body, spirit and nature. Through natural health education, research and clinical services, we improve the health and well-being of the human community.
…but only a handful of folks are walking the integral walk.
It’s a start, though!
Me, again. I only saw the beginning of your post vefore and read the rest after my previous comment.
I think it’s amazing what your education cost. I’m sure only part of the difference in price is due to government subsidization, but still there must be a much greater emphasis on education within the government.
I’m curious… How about brain drain? Obviously, you’re no longer in the PI. Do a significant percentage of folks leave once they have their education?
Evidently, you are a true blooded Plmayer, and just like you I’ve ranted (and still is) on the facilities in our beloved university not because it is dilapidated (on the contrary, most of them are new…we had some of our classroom installed with aircons, our “GL” was newly renovated and we even have a new stage in the open field! But what sucks is, most of the funds that was used was “allegedly corrupted” by some officials so right now as I am talking to you the newly installed windows, aircons and the badly designed stage are starting detriorate.
Indeed, we are getting more than we are paying for but it wasn’t because most of our professors are competent (I’m not sure if during your time they were) nor for the less-than-conducive facilities, it was more because of the fact that most of our classmates are ACHIEVERS in their respective high schools! (aside from those recons who continually roam because of their connections with the city hall officials). I am not like them, so I was kinda like pushed to their lifestyle of stiff academic competition amidst scarcity of resources. And I was more than impressed, they are willing to do anything beyond their abilities just to get a grade that’s much higher than their most intellegent classmate. If there’s anything that Pamantasan never cease to teach us it’d be the value of being resourceful. But due to this crave of having flat 1 on their classcards, most of us tend to follow whatever the Professor told us to do to the point of losing our “common sense”.
I’m quite confused right now, I don’t know if I should stay in an institution providing the one of the best academic education one could have and lose my capacity to be righteously outspoken, pay extremely high tuition fees for good education and be outspoken at the same time or to pay not that much but not get the education that I want but still keep my personality. Cause for everybody’s information, our university had just evicted the student publication board for the reason that the said board released the ongoing dubious practices of our beloved administration officials. And sad to say, that ALMOST NOBODY…ACTIVELY empathized with them and because of that fact, a new student publication board was born — under the iron hands of our admininstration, we are made to publish ‘nice’ things about our school and nothing else.
There is a long story that I wish to tell, but you see, I don’t have much time for this…Btw, it might seem that I am against the university officials and personnel, not because they are my personal enemies (some of them are even close friends of mine), I am angry to their unprofessional practices, for this has been a explicit show of power over to people and I’ve never experienced it…not even once during my elementary and secondary grades…for the schools where I came from one rule stands ahead of us: WE ARE ALL EQUALS, NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO SUPPRESS ANYONE NOR TO BE SPECIAL WHEN THEY HAVE WRONGED. RESPECT FOR ONE ANOTHER.
…If I had the financial ability to enroll in another school, I wish that I did.
…I guess that’s the price that I have to pay for being a PLMayer.
…Known for academic excellence and corrupt practices…How IRONIC…truly an EPITOME OF TYPICAL FILIPINO POLITICS.

plm is a nice university. para ka na ring nasa up or ust!!!!
hehehe, I’m back! Surprising but nonetheless interesting was my first “mixed” reaction after seeing my comment in my “friend’s” friendster bulletin. Needless to say, my words made quite a stir to some students…amidst the ocean of typographical errors and thousands of open/closed parenthesis they were still ‘urged’ to post the said message.
Singapore_sling…there’s a surplus in PLM, an excessive number of corrupt employees/officials. On the other hand, we are having a scarcity on credible/competent instructors.
Edfer…we are far from being in line with UP or UST. For they are allowed to speak their minds while we are “only” permitted to crack our heads.
For my anonimity makes me free.

Hi to all of you… I would like to address this to people who is in the field of Medicine, Health, wellness and biotechnology and of course graduate or student of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila. Good day to the members and to the moderator.
I would like to ask about the schedules of PLM regarding the Admission Exams. I have visited the site, and I think it is somewhat outdated as it said of dates on 2005.
Thank you. Hope that someone could help me out. Thanks!

Hello to all the PLM alumni worldwide. The class of 1978 of the Department of Mass Communications recently held its worldwide alumni reunion (April 2006). The two-day grand reunion was held at the Holiday Inn Galleria Penthouse, and was attended by over 50 alumni, former professors, and guests. The alumni came from all parts of the globe, including North America, Europe, and Asia. For additional information, please visit http://www.plmmasscom78.com. I encourage all PLM alumni to seek out one another and to re-establish friendships and lines of communications. Good luck to everyone.
thanks for the info Erick. i hope you all had fun.
here’s the website again with the hyperlink:
http://www.plmmasscom78.com/
Thanks to my fellow PLM alumni for visiting our worldwide website. It is rudimentary at this point because I am not a web design expert by profession (I am a litigation/telecom attorney in Washington, D.C.). Although our website initially was focused on the mass comm class of ‘78, we have decided to broaden its scope to include information regarding PLM alumni (without regard to class or college/department), faculty (past and present), and the PLM community in general. We feel that a central repository for PLM-related information on-line is generally non-existent and, accordingly, we have decided voluntarily to perform this function, at least initially. I invite you to contact us and share your information with us. Our email address is ecs0317@plmmasscom78.com. Thank you.
nag aral ako sa plm 1975 -1977, college of nursing,

BE SAVED. READ & OBEY ACTS 2:38 IN THE BIBLE…
i have to admit that i miss my dear pamantasan surviving at 4 years . . .
hindi ko alam na makakayanan ko un . . .
and here i am finding a career . . .
astig maging isko!
iska! for my case . . .
Yah! i could still remember my days in pamantasan, inabot me dyan ng 6 surviving yrs bgo nk graduate (from nursing to marketing to accouting), pero bawi nman lhat.pmantasan is an instrumental for what i have and where i am now. and dmi kong nkita n k batch ko dti n nkatira lng s gilid ng tren, s mga skinita n pg pasok mo s bhay mauuntog k.but look at them now, after 10 years, very successful n on their carrers, at s mga condo at subdivision n nkatira.sbi nga nila sino mgssabi d dting anak lng yan ng lbandera!one time npadaan me s glorietta, nkita ko yung dting ngtitinda (batch 91-96 cguro kilala nyo sya)ng pulburon, (at iba pa), hanep and porma, wlang sinabi si manny pacyaw s dmi ng gold s ktwan, at ang shoes burberry!
Sina Susan, Claire, Basil, Noel, the late Bernie, and of course Ma’am Capul!
mabuhay PLM!!!
it’d been not easy to finish engineering course in PLM.instructors/prof.. used to give syllabus on the 1st day of class and examinations on succeeding meetings,, wahhh,we have to borrow all the books in our library, rizal lib.,national lib..read etc.dahil di alam kung san base exams, of course, grade conscious kasi takot ma kick out sa college!I’m 83′ graduate. I Salute to PLMROTC Corps also.
I agree with you guys! I’m also a proud student of PLM Graduate School of Management. Though there are some professors who lacks industry know-how (lalo na mga oldies), there are also professors that can really relate to and teach us well in the right perspectives… Kahit nakapikit pa!
Professors like Doc Magracia, Doc Luspo, Doc Romero, and Doc Neri are my considered pride of the GSM. Hope they will still stay with PLM until my kids grew old and study also at GSM.
Sayang wala na sina Dr. Ong & Dr. Apostol.
Mabuhay PLM
You are right colleagues. I’m very privileged being part of the University…especially being one of the classmates of the existing Professors. Kaya I met most of them as classmates. They are really great…but meron naggagaling-galingan (‘eRolSublor’) meron naman talagang magagaling….gaya ng mga Professors na-mention nyo!
They are really the Prides of the PLM!
you are right docstude meron talagang magagaling na prof sa school (sana di sila magbago at dumami pa lahi nila) pero yong mga naggagaling-galingan (as what u mentioned – dagdag ko pa [esmobli]) dapat dyan binibitin ng patiwarik o kaya dinadala sa luneta para mabaril na ng hindi na makahawa pa. the school should investigate the existence of the MAGNIFICENT 5 who wants that every stude should hire consultancy for their papers to be able to graduate.. and do you know how much ang asking price (wow!!) from 100 thou to 200 thou kasi mababawi daw naman yon in the future.. dapat dito sa mga taong halang ang kaluluwa na to e sunugin sa impierno … ano akala nila mayayaman ang nag-eenrol sa school … hoy — isang kahig isang tuka lang din kami no! kaya ba nagsisibagtabaan kayo at lumalaki ang tiyan ninyo e nakaw ang nilalamon ninyo??? mabulunan sana kayo mga magagaling na buwaya kayo…. pati ibang matitino dyan e nadadamay tuloy sa kababalaghan ninyo.
cn i apply n plm evntho m living n capiz? wana b one of d students n plm.. hopfulie pde.. cn anyone help me how to get a form n plm? plz.. thanks a lot..=]
Hello astig PLM…. it really feels good 2 read ur comments… i could say dat i love PLM kht freshman plng me under gened nxt year p me mgkkcourse sana 2magal me d2 lke u guyz….. im planning 2 tke up bs chemistry…… wsh me luck….. GOD bless!
Hi abigail. Cool, you’re planning to take up B.S. Chemistry. B.S. Chem din ako sa PLM, dunno pero dyan pa ba si Roderick De Luna (batchmate ko yun na nag prof daw ngayon), S’ Lemuel Tayo, Ms. Sabando, et al. Also a proud member of Syntax Errorr Organization.
I love PLM but too bad the administrators doesn’t seem to love it. There have been news about corruption erupting on popular broadsheets… gee, how sad is that?! Maybe that explains why our Nusing Laboratory cannot be called Nursing Lab, rather, an old dusty and creepy WAREHOUSE without anything but plain garbage! Oh, and the “Kapit System”?! I hate that. Some people who flunked in some of their subjects are still in PLM-CN, i remember that before i shifted to PLM-CN, it was clearly stated that a student who’d have a failing mark of 5 and those that would not be able to maintain their GPA/GWA cut off (2.5) would be ditched out of the College. I think these factors contribute to the decline in Licensure passing rate of PLM-College of Nursing.
Radical Reform might be needed in changing the deep rooted putridness of the system.
Very organized ang curriculum ng MBA ngayon. As well as teaching methodologies applied by some faculty members. Like in the case of Dr. Magracia, properly evaluated ang books (latest editions) na gamit namin with updated cases. Guided by presentations and of course Practice-based know-how ng Professor para di kami maligaw! Interactive! We salute you, Sir!
I love PLM!
I wish to thank the late Mayor Antonio Villegas for establishing this free university. I am in the United States now wherein I am in a good position and salary, living a comfortable life. If I did not get the full scholarship (including free lunch complete with vegemeat, free uniform, books, Christmas gifts from Dr. Villegas) I would have stayed longer in school and working. We were so few during those times. We were the first batch. We always had fears of being shut down every year for lack of fnds. Only 14 in our Bachelor of Business of Bus. Economics. No line while enrolling, we know each other in the entire PLM. I am grateful that Dr. Reyes patterned our curriculum as in the United States. All my AA, Bachelor and MBA were accredited. I just wish that the same acedemic standards were still there. Every semester there is a fear that we will be kicked out. Some were so stressed. I miss our so peaceful university which started with only 800 students, and only 300 of us graduated in 1972.
hello there!!!
i am really grateful and satisfied being a graduate of plm twice…. (bachelor and doctoral). however, i had a bad experience in requesting for my transcript of records in the dba program… for almost seven months now since the first request of the tor from the registrar’s office up to this date… no tor at sight yet…. they always reason out that there is no board resolution number yet…. until this point in time??? is this the result of corrupt practices and extravagant spending as pointed out by the COA report??? and i also noticed what some of you have mentioned…. the recon students…. during my time…. when a student cannot cope up with the demands and stresses of plm academic atmosphere…. the best way to resolved it is to leave the university… and most of the time… you are automatically kicked-out of the university…. but, when i entered the graduate school… i noticed young blood queueing for what they call recon????? i said to myself wwwwwwwwwwhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaattttttttt???? pwede na pala yun ngayon????????
My days at PLM was difficult being a working student and at the same time maintaining grades. I had experienced warning, and then good standing..Warning again, and again good standing. eventually I finished BSEE.
We were exceptional then; every job exams we took, we seemed to be on top. The last one was the entrance to MPEP of Meralco. All of us passed the exam. Some was not able to report on time for interview and some was sick and was allowed to get in the program after being cured.
My classmate Jimmy Mendoza is now member of the PRC Board of examiner for Electrical Engineering? Congrats Jimmy. I’ll see you in one of my vacation in PI. Regards to Meralco guys..Angel Receno, Bong Mangaban, Mon Timoteo, and everybody.Congrats to Rey Diaz,,president of a big company now in Phil?
PLM as a school is a second rate copycat compared to other universities…Tell your officials not to be corrupt….
Too much of a critic Westlet… If you want, we can set-up a date for a “Showdown” so we can clearly see which among us are coming from a second rate copycat school. We have established our Institution well and ahead of others. The performance record will speak for it self. You are just a coward little boy who is hiding inside your Mom’s skirt. It seems that your school didn’t teach you proper values. Tell your self not to be a corrupt person when you deal with your life’s undertakings.
helo s pinakamamahal kong bes xi bessie chel

I’ve always thought that PLM would come a long way, and it did, being one of the most highly regarded universities in the Philippines, and perhaps in the world. I was indeed lucky to be admitted in that school when it was still a “free university” – free in everything, including uniforms and lunches. That was back in 1969, but the drawback was, we had to campaign for the political candidates of the late Mayor Antonio Villegas on our off days during election years. The school was highly politicized during its first three years. There were numerous times when we had to stage rallies and demonstrations in front of the City Hall to get the school budget approved.
Back then, every student had to graduate from a two-year program called Associate in Arts before pursuing a major discipline. Many students didn’t like the idea for the simple reason that they wanted to finish college and find a job right away.
O.K. I finished my AA but quit on my fourth year in the field of education. I joined the United States Navy for the proverbial greener pasture and to live what everyone now refers to as,”the American Dream.”
So instead of becoming a high school teacher, I switched to journalism and spent 20 years with the United States Navy as one of the very few Filipino journalists in the United States Department of Defense. I traveled all over the world in support of the U.S. military diplomacy and joint exercises with host nations. I ended my military career at the Naval Air Station in Agana, Guam as the Public Affairs Officer, having been assigned to prestigious commands ranging from the NATO’s Supreme Allied Commader Atlantic to the Pacific Fleet Headquarters in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. What I’d like to point out here is the education that I acquired from PLM played a major role in my successful military career.
I also took college courses from the University of Hawaii and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and I must say the quality of education at PLM is at par with these respected schools. PLM may not have the state of the art equipment in the academic world but the curriculum there spells world class. Definitely, I’m proud to be a part of the school.
After my military career, I went to school again and graduated with an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Electronics Technology at the Heald Institute of Technology in Hayward,California. I landed a job as a Network Specialist with WorldCom/MCI group, which at that time was the largest long distance call provider.
I’m now in my early 50’s and still working, currently as an Assistant Manager with Walgreens Drugs store, the number one drug store in America.
Every now and then, I’d meet PLMers here and there, and each one has a success story to tell. I have yet to meet a PLMer who didn’t do well, especially here in the United States. The bottom line is, each one attributes PLM’s academic excellence as a key ingredient in the recipe for success.
Thanks PLM!

We are missing already a very good Graduate School Professor, Dr. Lemuel Magracia! The best ang teaching style.. very interactive!
I agree with you, GS Stude. He’s known already not only in the academe. Ang alam ko, very busy these days si Dr. Magracia.. We’re learning a lot from him, I just hope he will spare time again for the Grad school.
Got a chance to be handled by Dr. Lemuel Magracia. Who will forget Sir, w/ vast experience in the industry and a known academician in the field of research and management. I still recall his signature slogan “Attitude makes life 100%”. This person really speaks from the heart. He synthesizes ideas, theories and experience well.
Hello I am a graduate of PLM College of Nursing batch ‘92. While reading most of the compliments here just made me so proud of being a PLMayer, I never thought this blog ever existed. I am a Registerd Nurse here in the US, my career started when my family and I migrated to the US, we stayed in Bakersfield, ca for 6 years and a year ago transfered to the Bay Area (San Francisco/Bay Area), currently I am working at San Quentin State Prison (where you can find the condemned and lifer’s are encarcerated) unlike the prison system sa Pinas, dito its like a hotel (Hotel California nga) they can check-in anytime they like but can never leave (except being dead).
Anyways, I would like to meet with Dan Guiam and other PLMayers here in America, it would be wonderful to have an association here.
Whenever my fellow nurses ask me where I graduated I always proudly say PLM. I think its all because of our training (sa hirap ba naman!!!), I finished nursing with hard work, hard study, hard dedication (lahat hard, para lang pumasa)its like going through the eye of a needle every semester/year until graduation.
Nevertheless, looking back at it I owe it to Pamantasan. I remember when I was assigned to take care of Dean Mary Vita Jackson at St. Luke’s, someone in that room predicted that I would go places, truly enough, I did. Hopefully someday we can all give something back to PLM, she gave what is due us, might as well give what is due Her. MAKE HER PROUD TOO.
My only regret, I should have taken Spanish Class.(spanish 101 became an elective subject 1987) Mi Habla poquito espanyol, comprende, mucho mexicanos, latinos en Estados Unidos.( I don’t even know if this is correct spanish diction).
More power to all PLMayers!!!
God Bless.
Hello!
Congratulations to Mr. Tristan Laurino. I’m so cheered up. I’m studying at PLM CN, and I nearly got a “singko” (5, failed) but I made it, i’m so happy.
And happier because I found an alumni!
By the way, do you have any information about Mrs. Mary Vita B. Jackson? and or a picture?
PLM CN will be having the MVJ event in part with the celebration of its 40th anniversary.
A picture of MJV and or any detail about her and her ways of teaching will really help my subcommitte!
Thank you!

Again, congratulations Mr. Tristan Laurino!
Thank you so much!
Studying DBA & MBA from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila is really challenging. Like overcoming the stress of the Comprehensive Exam, Case Studies, Research & Presentations, and of course the Dissertation. But with such good Professors like Dr. Lemuel Magracia, you will really learn in the processes. I definitely value his share in the Graduate School. Salamat po!
Hi, I’m a graduate of PLM batch BSME 2002. Just like all of us here I’m also proud to be a PLMayer. Do you know what I’d learned in PLM aside from academics?,they also thought me to be more of “maabilidad”.
